The Exilles fortress is one of the most ancient monuments in the Susa Valley and dates back to the 115, when counts of Albon had the strategic, military and mercantile power in the area.
During the centuries the fortress was transformed and modernized, it was contended with opposite catholic factions (in 1500) and was rebuilded around the middle of the 1700, introducing defensive and logistic features, with independent and self-sufficient elements.
The Utrecht treaty of the 1713, transferred the royal authority from the French king to the Savoia dynasty, causing the overturn of the defensive front.
After the Paris treaty (15 May 1796) the fortress was completely destroyed by the French and then between 1818 and 1829 was rebuilded in the present structure by the king of Sardinia.
In 1915 the fortress was dismantled and on 8th September 1943 it was abandoned by the soldiers; after that it lost its own military office.
